The North Bay Amateur Radio Club (NoBARC)

Who and what we are.

We are a group of hams and family members of hams who are putting the FUN back into amateur radio.

NoBARC is a different kind of amateur radio club. Most clubs have officers, directors, constitutions, and sometimes the associated politics, cliques and ego problems. NoBARC has none of that. We have no officers, directors, or constitution. Every member is equal. We are a social organization that not only gets along well together, but we have an enjoyment of amateur radio in common.

We get together to "play radio", go on outings, participate in contests, go on overnighters, or just plain socialize. Any of our members are free and encouraged to organize these outings any way they like. We like the lack of formal structure and the equality that we all enjoy.

NoBARC has monthly dinner meetings to swap stories, eat and just socialize and have fun. Sometimes we even accomplish some organizing of upcoming activities. Sometimes that organizing is saved for email communications. The meetings have no formal agenda and members are welcome to come as they are, come early or late, leave early or stay until everyone is gone. These meetings are open to members only, however, unless someone has been given an invitation by the group to check us out and be considered for membership.

How does NoBARC bring in new members?

There are two ways that NoBARC has brought in new members. Sometimes NoBARC has made first contact and issued an invitation to one of our dinner meetings so that an individual may get to know us, and vice versa. Sometimes, individuals contact us directly and ask about NoBARC and how they may join.

In order to preserve our group dynamic, we are selective about the people to whom we issue invitations. Before invitations are issued, a concensus to issue an invitation to dinner is OK'd by current club members. After we have had a chance to get to know each other and after the meeting, a vote is taken on whether or not to ask the person if they would like to become a member of NoBARC. By following this procedure we have been able to grow and ensure the harmony of our group since our beginnings in January of 2000.

If you are the kind of person who would like to socialize with others and share a common interest in amateur radio with no need to bring a personal agenda or big ego, we would like to hear from you. You can send us email at nobarc@gmail.com and tell us a little bit about yourself and why you would like to be considered for membership in NoBARC.

Thanks-
